Edison High School student Ruth Sherrill signed a letter of intent today to play college basketball for Hofstra University next year.

"I'm smiling like it's my daughter sitting here," said Edison girls basketball coach Dianne Lewis. "I'm so proud of Ruth."

Sherrill, a 6-foot-1 power forward, also considered signing with William & Mary or East Carolina University, she said, but chose Long Island-based Hofstra because of its business program. She verbally committed to the school in October.

Sherrill was the National District 2010-11 co-player of the year.
